Taking the road less traveled...

When Amy Niedermann called to book her son Nick's senior session... we talked.

The longtime client of mine  and I talked options, pricing, and then we discussed clothing.

For those that don't know... the photographer "mantra" that nearly everyone regurgitates is "solids photograph better... avoid stripes/plaids/or things with design or text on it.

Why?

The thought process is that those looks are busy and your eye has a hard time digesting the image sometimes if the shirt is too distracting.

I give my mantra... and then Mama Amy says, "so, would a concert t-shirt work, then?"

Ahem.  :)

She knew the answer... but i diplomatically suggested that even though her son (who evidently LOVES having his picture taken... again... ahem) wear whatever truly makes him look and feel like himself so he gets what HE wants... and then on the other outfit... make sure mom gets what SHE wants.

So, due to his love-for-photography attitude, we did our smallest and therefore presumably less painful session... and the result was a couple outfits that could not be more different.

Dude walked in a All That Remains concert tee and a stocking cap mashed down on his head and I could clearly see that I was gonna need to get Nick an urban look... so we did that.

I knew from past sessions with Nick and his family, that he wasn't gonna be a big smiler... but I'm okay with that... and more importantly... so was mom.   We did get a few crooked ornery like-he's-getting-away-with-something grins... and that just made mom's day.

So after getting his urban stuff done... it was off to get in his "favorite" outfit... ok... maybe not-so-much.... but it did give his mom a classic look that would offset the other end of the spectrum outfit.

It was shirt and tie time, and surprisingly, I thought Nick was okay with that.   Furthermore... throughout the session I got the distinct feeling that our xbox gamer extraordinaire and future game developer may have been (and i stress the word MAY) actually enjoying himself.

And if that was indeed the case... I can chalk up another win for the photographer.   Thanks Team Niedermann... it was nice catching up with both of you.
