Burinin' Red: May your glory never die...

This one was right up my alley.

Athletic senior... her school, even though it's out of our core area, I'm very familiar with.   And if that weren't enough... she's going to my college alma mater next year.

This couldn't be set up any better, could it?

Sure it could.  Turns out her mom and I went to that very college at the same time a lifetime ago... AND (this one might be the best) she loves Taylor Swift ALMOST as much as I do.

Allow me to fill in the blanks.

Back in the day, the author of this blog would square off with the boys from New Sharon in football and track.   The football season almost always opened with North Mahaska, and the track battles that were waged with the Warhawks were always epic.

So, to say I was familiar with Sarah's high school would be an understatement.   I ran on that crushed brick track... I played on that gridiron.

More recently, we've had a great run of North Mahaska seniors at our studio.  Credit where credit is due... my girl Morgan Fleener got the ball rollin' a few years back, and the string of amazing seniors from there has been consistent ever since.

So, when Sarah and Mama Karla showed up that day, I felt like we already had plenty to talk about, but that's when the layers of the onion started peeling back.

Sarah mentioned that for her sports images, she had all her jerseys and stuff, but she would be wearing a t-shirt to represent her college choice... Central College in Pella.

My ears perked up.

Mom then chimed in.

"Well... I went there too.... and we'd like to have a mother daughter image taken together in our Central T-shirts."

That's where I jumped in.

"I don't know if you're angling for a discount or not, but I'll be more than happy to do those images for ya, because someone ELSE went to Central was well."

That someone?  Sarah's senior photographer.

Once that came to light... it also was discovered that Karla, a native of Pella itself, was just one year ahead of me at the Central University of Iowa!

Small world, huh?

Naturally, then, the discussion during the session centered largely around the common thread that we all had.

From the sounds of things, Sarah will be playing softball for Coach Wares at Central.  (i swear the guy seemed like had been there forever 20 YEARS ago!).   I'm not so sure she couldn't help out the volley and/or track or hoops programs as well.   What is obvious, however, is that Sarah will help out the aesthetic quality of the campus with her presence.   Her twitter account tells me that she was very much NOT looking forward to her session as she modestly claimed to never like having her image made.  Nothing could be further from the truth, however, as anyone this side of Stevie Wonder can see that the camera clearly agrees with Miss Bowen.  ;)

I can't remember how it was that we stumbled upon the realization that Sarah and I were both big Taylor Swift fans... maybe a song came over our XM radio... maybe it was the fact that TSwift's new album, RED was just released the day before her session?   Regardless, we both shared yet one more thing in common, and we'll both look forward to her August 1, 2013 appearance at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Sarah's classmates played in that very arena as part of last year's remarkable 28-0 State Championship basketball run by the No.1 Warhawks... and while a Taylor Swift concert may not eclipse the memories that the school has already made in that building, it will be amazing nonetheless.

Best wishes the rest of your senior year, Sarah Bowen... and on to your future at Central College.  Lots of exciting times ahead... Thanks for letting me be a part of it in our own small way.
