Tuesday afternoon's senior made the visit all the way from Waukee High School.
Most of us know that if a PARENT makes a suggestion to a teen, it's many times looked with, at the very least, a skeptical eye. More often than not, even if the mention is legit, the very fact that MOM or DAD made it, would be enough to make most kids go the opposite direction.
That didn't happen here.
Jessica was looking for something more than whatever she was seeing in Dallas County. So when Papa Ric suggested that Jess should check out some dude that he used to go to college with back in the day, it could have been the kiss of death for me.
But it wasn't.
In fact, I THINK that shortly after making the suggestion, Mom and Dad were kind of regretting the idea of having to drive over an hour to get something done that could much more easily get completed closer to home. I mean, really... we're only talking about the most populated area in the state, right? Call me crazy, but I'm guessing there's probably a photographer or two in the greater Des Moines Metro area? ;-)
Regardless, Jessica was hooked and the roadie was inevitable.
So, Dad makes the suggestion, but it was Mom who did the running as Jessica's mother, Kristi, did the mid-week scramble and got her daughter here with everything in tow for her shoes-n-shoppin' lovin' daughter.
Not wanting to disappoint, I demanded that Jess get out of her comfort zone by getting in the water (she's still reeling from a traumatic capsizing accident in the Colorado river as a youth)... AND we busted out our trademark studio fire image (can't beat a gal with a credit card on fire, can you?) which was additional therapy for a gal that said she had burned herself at one time and has never forgotten that. (no guts... no glory, Jess!)
So, despite pushing her beyond her boundaries, I think the session was a success. She may still be reeling from facing her fears head on (in addition to a mosquito attack), but in the end... all worth it.
Thanks for the nudge, Ric. GO DUTCH!
