Kathryn (don't call her Katy) Perry was excited to be here.
She had talked her folks into senior pictures in Montour. At first blush, you may not know who they are. But, if I were to mention "Ev's," I bet you might.
Her Daddy, Howard, is the friendly face you've seen behind the window for years and years on Center Street in Marshalltown giving you healthy portions (or maybe I enjoy how UNhealthy it is!) of insanely good ice cream. More on that later.
On Kathryn's session date... she wanted to make sure to highlight something she and her boyfriend are very passionate about... RACING.
She happens to date the young fella named Ryan that lives just down the street from us in Montour. So, naturally, it was an easy add on to the session to work in the Number 57r car and it's "crew."
We ran around in the early morning trying to find spots that weren't TOO windy (we've had a LOT of insane breezes lately, have we not?) and then when the boys got the car ready... it was ON!
I'm not sure if it was an "advantage" or not to have the fellas around for the rest of the session as the razzin' that inevitably happens when a couple of young guys join the party during a young lady's session... but I gathered that by NOW, she is used to it!
I told the boys to behave themselves... and really, they did keep real at tolerable levels, and we thank them for their efforts with the car.
If you ask her, I think Kathryn will tell you she had a great time at her session. She facebooked about an hour in about how good things were going. That being said... I'm not sure that's going to be the first thing she remembers about her senior picture day.
I want to tread lightly here... but it cannot be ignored. The session was over... we were walking through pricing... and that's when it happened.
Daddy called.
I couldn't tell what had happened at the time, but the look on Kathryn's face told me all I need to know. Something was wrong... very wrong.
Turns out that Howard had called to tell his daughter that her step-mom, Ann was in bad shape. I haven't gotten all the details, but the harsh reality is that the woman Howard called his wife... and the gal that Kathryn called "mom" was called home that day by God.
I've worried about how to avoid this subject for the past couple weeks when thinking about this blog... and in the end, I couldn't... I'm positive that I've been served a ginormous Ev's Delight by Ann several times over the years... When Howard called me to set up Kathryn's session... he did business with me the same way he's ran his own for years... simply... and the way you'd expect a Mom and Pop shop to be ran... by treating others the way you'd want to be treated yourself. So when I told Howard I was running into town for some errands that day... I told him that I'd swing by the Marshalltown Landmark to pick up his deposit... one business owner to another.
It was then I talked with Howard and Ann a bit for the first time while not being a ice cream consumer. They both joked with me and before I left, Ann poked fun at her and Howard's relative "older" age by saying that Kathryn surely sees her folks as being older than the hills.
Reality says that at 51, Ann was taken from us far too early. Stewart Photography's thoughts and prayers go out to Kathryn, Howard and all the family in their time of loss.
