I tried to take it as a compliment... but deep down, I thought.... "uh oh."
Patti Weidner called to book her daughter's senior session a while back and let me know HOW important that art was to her girl.
She had transferred schools in search of more art classes... she's quirky... she's unique... she wants her images to be to say that... and SHE thinks my studio is the place to find it.
I told Patti to tell Paige thank you for her trust... and that I considered it a high compliment before we even met.
I hung up the phone... swallowed hard, and figured I had plenty of time until her session to figure something out.
Now... you're probably all over there going... "what's the big deal? doesn't everyone want unique images?"
Well, there's some truth to that... however... a little background information may be necessary.
For those that don't know... this author is a trained writer. A sports writer. More journalist than photographer, Yours Truly took ONE art class in high school.
One.
A math and science guy that simply just likes black and white... and needing the answer. Shades of grey didn't register with me. I had to make a concession with my psyche in college to allow myself to break from the math and science to enter a more subjective field in order to become a sports writer.
So, long story short, SERIOUS art students intimidate me. Sure, I'm in an art field. But, somehow... to me... it doesn't feel like it... Weird, I know... I must be in denial.
The time for mental preparation (or panic) came to an end last Friday when Paige came in with all her 'artsy-ness.' I told her I was dreading her session all week.... she asked why... I was honest... I told her I was intimidated.
Her answer?
"Good."
No, not something more along the lines of, "Awww... over little ol' me? Seriously? That's completely unnecessary.".... No, not that at all. Just a steely glare.... "Good," and a devilish smile.
HA!
So the competitor in me went to work... I admitted to Paige I was really no artist... I think it probably made her think a little less of me... but I hope the results will make all the difference.
Her session was amazing... we were dodging rain drops all afternoon... but it made for some REALLY cool lighting interesting looks. She was off the chain... one part beauty, one part playful, and like 10-parts Gaga. Paige likes to be different... and doesn't care what others think... that's obvious.
She was all over town... T-47 wasn't safe... she nearly fell off a jungle gym.... (and her photographer nearly the same off an old tractor).... she was leaping out of trees and probably most importantly... I got to meet her pride and joy.... Todd the Cat.
To bring this thing full circle... Mama Patti had asked on that very first phone call if there was anyway to make Paige look like a cat. I gave it my best shot... those are NOT contacts.
Thanks for pushing me, Paige.... it was fierce.
